About Setting the Record Straight
Despite widespread concern over issues like food safety, industrial agriculture practices, and climate change, most of the dialogue about food and health is limited to an analysis of the nutrients that foods contain and the impact that those nutrients have on the body. In reality, the current food system poorly impacts human health in many ways. From its reliance on fossil fuels, pesticides, antibiotics, and cheap labor, to its aggressive marketing of highly processed junk foods -- our food system is failing to promote health at every link in the chain.
Setting the Record Straight is a sign-on letter that aims to acknowledge the broader ways in which the current food system impacts health. For health and nutrition professionals, this document lays outs a set of principles which clearly define healthful food and act as a framework for developing programs, shaping community food systems, and advocating for food, nutrition, and agriculture policies that truly promote health. It also challenges food and beverage companies to produce food that reflects these principles.
