Good Health Counts: A 21st Century Approach to Health and Community for California

What makes a community healthy?  Good Health Counts: A 21st Century Approach to Health and Community for California synthesizes findings from nearly 100 community report cards and indicator reports from throughout the country and broadens understanding of all the elements that contribute to community health.  The report, prepared by Prevention Institute with funding from The California Endowment, helps make the connection between factors in the environment - including equitable opportunities, strong social ties, the ability to buy healthy foods, perceptions of safety to walk or play in the park, and affordable, quality medical services - and their impact on health.

The Spectrum of Prevention: Developing a Comprehensive Approach to Injury Prevention

Published in Injury Prevention, this article delineates the Spectrum of Prevention and illustrates its application to injury and violence prevention. The article also emphasizes the importance of changes in policies and norms to enhance the effectiveness of prevention initiatives.

A six-level framework that expands prevention efforts beyond education models by promoting a multifaceted range of activities for a more comprehensive and effective understanding of prevention.

American Public Health Association: Injury Control and Emergency Health Services Section
From November 2004 to December 2005, Larry Cohen, Executive Director of Prevention Institute served as the chair of the Injury Control and Emergency Health Services (ICEHS) section of APHA. ICEHS works to prevent unintentional and violence-related deaths and injuries, which include homicide, suicide and legal intervention, as well as the emergency public health services needed in response to such injuries.  As chair of ICEHS, Larry’s goal was to work with other APHA sections on cross cutting issues such as health disparities, violence against women, traffic safety, the built environment, and obesity prevention. Larry also emphasized the importance of local policy and the need to involve new leadership by engaging students and emerging leadersin the field.  As part of the monthly newsletter to ICEHS members, Larry wrote “Notes from the Chair.”
