Setting the Record Straight: Nutritionists Define Healthful Food

Sign-on Letter Now Released!

Strategic Alliance has released the sign-on letter, Setting the Record Straight: Nutritionists Define Healthful Food.  Motivated by concern over issues like food safety, industrial agriculture practices, climate change, and deceptive food marketing, health and nutrition professionals developed Setting the Record Straight to establish a clear, comprehensive definition of healthful food.  This definition looks beyond nutrients to acknowledge that truly healthful food comes from a food system where food is produced, processed, transported, and marketed in ways that are environmentally sound, sustainable and just.

Are you a health or nutrition professional?  And your name to the growing list of signatures endorsing Setting the Record Straight!  With your support, we will add to the growing momentum urging government and industry to promote policies and practices that create a sustainable, equitable, and healthful food system.

Realizing the Vision for a Healthy California

Strategic Alliance is preparing to release its new report, Realizing the Vision for a Healthy California: Opportunities in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.  This resource highlights the important opportunity that California has to leverage federal stimulus dollars to:

1. Support health-promoting infrastructure and programs that will jumpstart the economy;

2.Promote equitable health and safety outcomes, and;

3. Improve the business climate in California communities.

The report focuses on eight key areas of investment and highlights potential stimulus funding streams that could be utilized to support each area.  Stay tuned to Strategic Alliance for an announcement of this exciting report’s release!

CANFit Launches MO PROJECT

MOre good food, MOre physical activity, MOre play spaces, MOre opportunities for Youth!  That’s the tagline for California Adolescent Nutrition and Fitness’s (CANFit) new media competition targeting California Youth, ages 13-18.  CANFit is asking youth from across the state to create short films and posters that explore what is or is not in their neighborhood, community, school, or environment that plays a role in shaping their health.

Finding creative, visual ways to answer questions such as is good food available in my neighborhood or is there a safe place to play supports advocacy efforts aimed at creating healthy communities.  MO PROJECT submissions will be shown to state and local policymakers with the goal of helping to shape future funding and laws to create healthy communities.  Five winners will be chosen, including a People’s Choice Award, and prizes will be given.  To learn more or participate in MO PROJECT, click here.

Reports and Resources

“New Media, Same Old Tricks”

Food companies may be using their websites to promote foods high in fat, sugar, and salt to children as young as four-years old, says a new report released by Consumers International, an independent global coalition of consumer advocacy groups.

Released for World Consumer Day on March 15th, the report, entitled “New Media, Same Old Tricks” examined the websites of multinational food companies’ to determine the methods used to promote unhealthy food and drink to children under 16. The report found that the companies attract children online with online membership clubs, branded interactive games, My Space-style sites, free branded screensavers and wallpapers of popular characters and celebrities, as well as competitions and profile avatars.

The report also found that parents and caregivers are targeted with emotive messages about the educational value of online games, web safety information and promotional coupons.

Working with the International Obesity Taskforce, Consumer International’s report includes recommendations for an international code to target the marketing of unhealthy foods and nonalcoholic beverages to children up to 16 years old. This international code was proposed to the World Health Organization as part of the WHO public consultation, to take place in late March.

These recommendations include bans on radio or TV ads promoting unhealthy food between certain hours and marketing of unhealthy food to children using new media such as websites, social networking sites and text messaging. The proposed code also restricts promotion of unhealthy food in schools; the exclusion of free gifts, toys, or collectible items, and no use of celebrities, cartoon characters, competitions or free gifts.

In conjunction with the report, Consumers International also launched the campaign, “Junk Food Generation” to raise awareness and spur consumer action around the marketing of unhealthy food to children.

In the U.S., which currently lacks government regulation of food marketing to kids, President Obama has signed legislation establishing an Interagency Working Group on Food Marketed to Children.  The Working Group will conduct a study and develop recommendations for standards for the marketing of food when such marketing targets children who are 17 years old or younger or when such food represents a significant component of the diets of children.  The bill goes even further, stating “the Working Group will determine the scope of the media to which such standards should apply,” asking that the group report back to Congress by July 15, 2010.  To learn more, read “FTC Could Set Standards for Food Marketing Aimed at Teens,” published in Advertising Age.

New Survey Finds Farmer's Market Improves Shoppers' Eating Habits

Faculty and students at the University of Texas (UT) School of Public Health, Brownsville Regional Campus, created the Brownsville Farmer's Market to provide fresh and affordable produce, and also educate the public on nutrition and obesity.  Recent survey findings show that about eighty percent of the more than 400 weekly shoppers are now eating more fruits and vegetables, and in a wider variety.  Eighty-four percent of surveyed shoppers reported that the quality of the market produce surpasses that of produce elsewhere.  Click here to read a full article on the survey findings, by Bob Ewing.
