On July 9, the California Center for Public Health Advocacy released a new study on the cost of obesity in California. The study, The Economic Costs of Overweight, Obesity and Physical Inactivity Among California Adults - 2006, found that the cost of overweight, obesity, and physical inactivity had climbed to $41 billion in 2006, nearly double the amount reported in 2000. *** Sustainable and Healthy Food for San Francisco On July 9, 2009, San Francisco’s Mayor Newsom issued an executive order to promote access to healthy and sustainable food for all residents of San Francisco. The policy not only aims to address critical hunger and environmental issues, but to ensure that all residents have access to fresh fruits and vegetables. “Access to safe, nutritious, and culturally acceptable food is a basic human right and is essential to both human health and ecological sustainability,” states Newsom’s order.

2009 School Wellness Conference
The second biannual School Wellness Conference, to be held at the Anaheim Marriott October 6–7, 2009, is shaping up to be a key event for education policymakers and practitioners interested in improving student health and academic achievement. Sponsored by California School Board Association, the California Department of Education and the California Department of Public Health, the conference will bring together school board members and administrators, health educators and community leaders to explore effective wellness policies.
