Realizing the Vision for a Healthy California Opportunities in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
Strategic Alliance has recently released Realizing the Vision for a Healthy California, an analysis of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 that identifies opportunities to leverage stimulus funds to jumpstart the economy while improving health, equity and the environment. Realizing the Vision calls on Governor Schwarzenegger, the State Legislature and State Departments to leverage federal stimulus dollars for health-promoting infrastructure and programs that will jumpstart the economy, promote equitable health and safety outcomes, and improve the business climate in California.

Community Indicators for Prevention and Wellness, a memo sent to Kim Belshe, (Secretary of Health and Human Services, State of California) and Dr. Mark Horton, (Director, Department of Public Health, State of California), presents indices from the evaluations of Healthy Eating, Active Communities (HEAC) and the Central California Regional Obesity Prevention Program (CCROPP). The memo identifies indicators, methods, and analyses that can be applied to measuring the impact of other community wellness initiatives.

The Strategic Alliance for Healthy Food and Activity Environments is accepting nominations for the third biennial Journalism Award for Excellence in Nutrition and Physical Activity. The award will be presented during the 2009 California Childhood Obesity Conference in Los Angeles.
Given the media’s critical influence on the debate around healthy eating and physical activity, the award acknowledges a professional reporter, a student reporter and/or news source who strive to include an environmental and policy perspective in their coverage of nutrition and physical activity.
Potential nominees should be (1) a single article, TV or radio clip; or (2) a reporter or news source (print, TV or radio) that has produced a body of work that meet the following criteria:
Nominations must be submitted using this form. The deadline is May 8, 2009. One form should be submitted for each nomination. In addition to the completed nomination form, please include the nominated article, news clip or radio clip or one example that reflects the reporter’s/publication’s coverage of the issue. Feel free to copy the form if you want to nominate more than one person. E-mail, mail or fax nomination forms by May 8, 2009 to linnea@preventioninstitute.org or (510) 663-1280.
